Roger Federer: The highest-paid athlete in all of sports.
Federer made $106.3 million last year, according to Forbes, which released a list Friday of the top 100 highest-paid athletes in the world. Of Federer’s final income, $100 million came from endorsements.
Forbes explained its methodology in determining wages — all prize money, salaries and bonuses earned from June 1, 2019, to June 1, 2020. As a group, the top 100 raked in a combined $3.6 billion. That figure is nine percent lower than 2019 and is the first decline in four years.
Federer is the first men’s tennis player to land in the top spot. Women’s tennis players Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams made the list, with multiple women included for the first time since 2016.
Soccer stars with Cristiano Ronaldo ($105 million), Lionel Messi ($104 million) and Neymar ($95 million) follow Federer. LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers ($88.2 million) rounds out the top five.
Thirty-one football players made the list in 2020, up from 19 last year. Baseball saw its players go from 15 to one (Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw) in just one year, thanks to the postponement of the 2020 season and ensuing labor battle.
