Streaming services challenge network TV this fall
For millions of Dish Network and Sling subscribers, local Fox channels went dark Thursday in 16 markets across 23 states along with select cable networks.
The outage comes after the satellite and streaming service and Fox Corporation failed to reach a new agreement.
The cable networks off air include FS1, FS2, Big Ten Network, Fox Soccer Plus and Fox Deportes. Fox News is under a separate distribution agreement.
Both sides say in competing statements that the other is to blame for the blackout. In late July, an outage between Dish and Fox Sports regional networks began. This outage is still ongoing.

According to a Dish news release, Fox is “demanding a double-digit percentage rate increase for continued carriage of its local channels” and “attempting to ‘force bundle’ its local channels and unrelated cable networks to get more money and gain negotiating leverage.”
“To add insult to injury, Fox pulled its channels right as viewers head into the heart of the NFL and college football season,” said Andy LeCuyer, Dish senior vice president of programming, in the release. “We ask Fox to stop punishing its own viewers so we can focus on reaching a fair deal.”
Fox posted a statement on its website, www.keepfox.com.
“DISH is at it again, choosing to drop leading programming as a negotiating tactic regardless of the impact on its own customers,” Fox’s statement said. “DISH elected to drop FOX networks in an effort to coerce us to agree to outrageous demands. While we regret this is DISH’s preferred approach to negotiating, we remind our loyal viewers that the FOX services are widely available through every other major television provider.”
